Airport security liquid limit won’t be scrapped in time for summer holiday flights

Due in large part to delays in the supply chain and challenges with construction brought on by the machines’ weight, several airports have found it impossible to install the new scanners, which do away with the 100ml rule.

A planned relaxation of rules around airline passengers carrying liquids in hand luggage has been delayed by a year.

Major UK airports are believed to have been granted an extension for installing the new scanning technology after they were unable to meet the 1 June deadline.

The government granted a 12-month extension on a case-by-case basis, which should give them everyone enough time to finish the task.

Passengers will be able to get through airport security with containers carrying up to two liters of liquid in their hand luggage because the new scanners provide more detailed images.

In airports without the technology, there is still a 100 milliliter limit, and containers need to be placed in clear plastic bags.

Additionally, the new scanners eliminate the need to take laptops and tablets out of hand luggage.

The government has now said that financial penalties could be imposed for further non-compliance after the extension runs out.
