Barcelona Will Ban Rentals of Tourist Apartments by 2028

Unbelievable or not, Barcelona declared that, in an effort to reduce skyrocketing housing costs and make apartments more livable for locals, it will outlaw the rental of apartments to visitors by November 2028. The licences for the 10,101 short-term rental units will be cancelled, according to Mayor Jaume Collboni.

Housing Crisis: Over the last ten years, Barcelona’s rents have increased by 68% and property values by 38%, rendering housing unaffordable for many citizens, particularly the city’s youth. Housing disparity is the main issue facing the city, and this action attempts to alleviate it.

Impact on the Economy and Society:

While tourism helps Spain’s economy, gentrification and growing housing costs affect the local populace. Advocates, such as Isabel Rodriguez, Spain’s housing minister, praise the decision for encouraging the development of affordable housing. Opponents like the Barcelona Tourist Apartments Association issue dire warnings about the possibility of rising rates of unemployment, poverty, and unauthorised rentals.

Sector of Hospitality:

This ban may help hotels because it may allow new hotel openings in well-traveled locations. The city intends to renovate vacation rentals into homes for locals, either for sale or rent.

Continuous Efforts:

Since 2016, Barcelona has already returned 3,500 unlawful vacation rentals to neighbourhood residents. After the ban, the government will keep up its stringent inspections to stop illicit rentals.
